Rep & Rev Play Reading Series

Rep & Rev is a new play reading series at the historic Gem Theater in Kansas City that attempts to capture diverse experiences of black life in the United States and the African Diaspora. By engaging the concept of repetition and revision in jazz, we hope to reveal literal and abstract connections that black playwrights have to a variety of black music traditions. As producers of this series, we believe that acts of improvisation that occur through performance on the page and the stage are directly connected to the complex cultural history and global circulation of black American music traditions. This program is designed to place past and present playwrights in a jam session that can offer audiences opportunities to hear the rich connections that exists between black theater and black music forms as we inspire further repetition and revision in the arts. The monthly series is free and open to the public and will feature talkbacks with the actors, directors, and select playwrights after each performance.

Rep & Rev is a project devised by Associate Professor Nicole Hodges Persley
