Scott C. Knowles is an assistant professor in the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at Southern Utah University. He received an M.A. from Florida State University and is completed a PhD at the University of Kansas in 2016. While at Kansas he worked as a Grant Development Specialist at the Hall Center for the Humanities and served three years as the Managing Editor for the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism.
Scott’s artistic work is primarily in directing and dramaturgy. His directing credits include, The Laramie Project, Intimate Apparel, and Hamletmachine. Most recently, he served as the dramaturg for a production of Waiting for Godot.
Scott’s research interests include the intersections between violence, performance, race, and gender with a particular emphasis on how the performance of violence affects an audience, and consequently how performed violence is used as a political or social tool to achieve certain goals. He has presented several papers at various conferences, including, “Rehearsing Research, Researching Rehearsal: Directing dramaturgical research in rehearsal space” (2013) at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE), “Mythic Brecht: Reperformance as the Creator of Myth” (2013) at the Mid-America Theatre Conference (MATC), “Lesbian Masculinity: Split Britches, Killer Lesbians, and The Women Who Love Them” (2012) at MATC, and “Ruined: An Articulation of Race, Gender, and Violence” (2012) at the ATDS Plains State Work-in Progress Colloquium.
